Final Group Remix: General Assignment Instructions
Project Overview
For your final project, you and your team members are part of a new music DJ collective and are tasked with creating a powerful, socially conscious new remix. The goal of this final project is to use music to “communicate” about an issue or idea. Your final project has three main components: a composition, a one-page overview of your samples and composition, and album artwork. The last two components (explanation and artwork) should be submitted in one document.
Composition: General Information
Your composition (“remix”) should engage with issues and ideas that are relevant in today’s world. Your composition should have musical samples, lyrics, sounds, speeches, and other musical material that resonates with your overarching “socially conscious” concept and main goals. Your group members can also sing, read spoken word, play music, and/or contribute homemade sounds of your choice. Your remix should run around 3-5 minutes long.
(You should keep your music clips short and pointed. Since this remix will not be published and is used for educational purposes, the song clips fall under fair use. That said, you should be very judicious in the use of your clips!) Each member can collaborate via Soundtrap’s collaborative features. (You can also find information on Soundtrap in the Course Overview Module in Canvas.)
Formatting and Submission Guidelines
Your composition should be submitted as an mp3. Under no circumstances will emailed submissions be accepted. Please submit directly to Canvas.
One-Page Overview of Composition and Album Artwork: General Information
A one-page overview and album artwork should accompany your final composition. The overview should outline which samples were incorporated and why, while also explaining the big goals of your remix. The album artwork should visually realize your musical composition.
Formatting and Submission Guidelines
Your overview should take up the first page, while your artwork should be one page on the second page. Under no circumstances will emailed submissions be accepted. Please submit directly to Canvas. Please cite all image, lyrical, and other source material appropriately (MLA, Chicago, APA – your style choice!).
Grading
Your composition, one-page overview, and album artwork are graded using the following rubrics.
Final Group Remix: Assignment Steps
The following images show how the assignment is constructed in an online format. I also use similar approaches to group work in traditional classes, breaking down each step of the process and providing detailed feedback.
Final Group Assessment
At the conclusion of the group project, students assess their contributions and the contributions of each member. This survey is administered via Canvas and can be previewed below.
